Local food & farms

May 20

Quabbin Harvest will be part of a region-wide "doors open" style event highlighting the joys and challenges of keeping a food business thriving in the North Quabbin area. The May 20 tour is part of the "Crossroads: Rural Change in America" Smithsonian exhibit at Athol Library May 14-June 23.

Along with local farmers and others, we'll be talking with tour visitors about what it takes to sustain a food business over time and how we're building toward the future.
Store Manager Julie Davis will be on hand from 10 am to 12 pm to share some insights about how we've grown the co-op in recent years and what we're looking forward to in the next few.

From 12-2 pm, Jared Duval of Coolidge Hill Farm in New Salem will be in the store to talk about his farm, which he recently purchased after cultivating it for several years. Jared is one of our produce vendors at the co-op and he also sells at some of the farmers markets around the area.

The full schedule of participants is available on the Quabbin Food Connector's website. Watch for a brochure and map there and in our store soon, too.

The tour is being organized by volunteers from Quabbin Food Connector with support from the Local Cultural Councils of the seven towns where the tour venues are located: Athol, New Salem, Orange, Petersham, Phillipston, Warwick, and Wendell. These local agencies are funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Crossroads is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and state humanities councils nationwide. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress. The exhibit is free and open to the public and can be viewed any time the library is open.
